RAPID TRANSIT MATTERS.
Slight changes are being made to-day in the plans of the Brooklyn
Elevated Railroad Company. The most important of these is that concerning the
placing of girders on the five miles of line yet to be completed. The
longitudinal girders will henceforth be placed on top, instead of level with the
transverse girders.

The gentlemen who propose to organize the Nassau Cable Road Company
will hold an organizational meeting at the office of Mr. John C. BERGEN, 16
Court street, next Friday afternoon. The Nassau's papers went to Albany to-day.

GENERAL MATTERS IN THE COURTS.
Principal RYAN, of Gravesend, Testifies in His Own Behalf.
Michael J. RYAN is teacher of Public School No. 6, in the Town of
Gravesend. His wife, Annie C., sues him, as already announced, for limited
divorce on the ground of cruel and inhuman treatment. The trial was continued this
morning before Mr. Justice CULLEN in the Supreme Court. Mr. RYAN, who
testified in a straightforward, manly way, said that the only night he ever spent
from home was when he went to Paterson, N.J., to find a home for his sister.
During the holidays he acted as cashier for Paul BAUER, at Coney Island, from
6:30 in the morning to 11:30 at night. One night he came home very tired. His
wife sat up in bed and screamed and would not listen to reason. He told her
that he must rest and if she did not stop he would put her out of the room. He
put her out and was afterward sorry for it. She asked to come in and he let
her. By 4 o'clock in the morning they were reconciled. He got water and
washed her face and never slept all the night. He gave her money to go and see her
parents, and told her not to forget to tell them that he said she must give
up them or him. She seized a carving knife and threatened him and called him a
black devil. He took the knife from her and told her not to disgrace
herself. She pulled his hair and boxed his ears. She went home the same afternoon
and returned next day. When he came home he found a man with his wife. The
man said: "I want to talk with you, young man." The defendant told him to quit
the house, and he said he would not. Then the defendant sent for a
policeman. When the defendant went into the basement to light the fire, the man
followed and said he would wring his neck. Then the policeman arrived and put the
man out. His wife washed only for him and herself, as he hired Mrs. McCREADY
to do the washing. He always cooked the breakfast.
Here Mr. Frederick PAPE, of 170 South Fourth street, father of the
plaintiff, made a noise as though he was driving cats from his rear premises.
the plaintiff smiled.
The defendant said he found no fault with his wife, as she was not to
blame.
When recess was taken, Mr. PAPE shook his fist at the defendant.
One of the Midnight Marriages in Court.

Lawyer John L. DEVENNY got an order from Mr. Justice CULLEN this
morning in the Supreme Court to show cause why Walter E. HILL should not be
punished for contempt for having failed to pay $30 alimony and $50 counsel fee.
Walter, who is about 18 years old, sues Fannie J., about the same age, to annul a
marriage between them performed at midnight on Christmas day, 1883, by the
Rev. U.D. GULICK. The plaintiff says he was drunk when he married the defendant,
Fannie J. BREAKSPEARE, whom he accuses of having procured the marriage by
false representations. All the facts have been published. The order is
returnable on Monday next.

Suit Against the City Railroad Company.
Semon HANSEN has begun a $2,500 damage suit in the Supreme Court
against the Brooklyn City Railroad Company, for alleged personal injuries,
received, on February 2, last. Plaintiff claims that while he was
attempting to board a Third avenue car at Carroll street he was thrown
down through the carelessless (sic) of the driver, and while holding
on to the rail of the platform was dragged through the mud and dirt
and otherwise so injured as to incapacitate him for since attending
to business. Jere a. WERNBERG for plaintiff.

For Lack of a Competent Witness.
William RYAN, a shaggy bearded man of middle age, was called up for
trial this morning in the Court of Sessions, before Judge MOORE and a jury,
charged with having assaulted a little seven year old girl. The lattter on being
privately questioned by His Honor was found to lack the intelligence necessary
to make her a competent witness. When asked where she would go should she
tell a lie she replied "to Heaven." The jury were thereupon discharged, and the
prisoner held by the District Attorney on a charge of exposure.

SMITH-GEDNEY-- On August 12, 1889, by the Rev. W.C. WILSON, George H. SMITH to Ida F. GEDNEY. Both of Brooklyn 1 June 1886 SUICIDE OF A MELANCHOLY TAILOR After a Visit to His First Wife's Grave He Ends His Troubles with a Pistol. A trivial cause for suicide was adopted yesterday by Engelhardt BALDOF, aged forty-three years, a German tailor, doing business at No. 896 Sixth avenue, New York. Up till two months ago, BALDOF, who makes liveries and ladies' riding habits, had kept shop at No. 600, five doors from his present location, but was annoyed by the tenants in the basement, with whom he was unable to get along, chiefly because he was of a fretful, excitable temper. BALDOF moved out of his shop a month ahead of time, while his lease was yet running, but refused to surrender the keys till May 1st or to pay rent for April. The agent brought suit for the money. At the same time a mechanic who had put some lettering on the door of BALDOF's new store sued him for $10. On Thursday evening a deputy sheriff went to BALDROF's (sic) store and seized five pieces of cloth as security for the claim and costs. There was an angry quarrel, in which the deputy and the tailor shoved each other against the plate glass window and it was smashed. Another expense was thus added to the troubles already besetting the tailor. He went home much worried. On Friday he visited his first wife's grave in the cemetery and yesterday morning early started down town to see his counsel, Judge STECKLER, about the suit for rent. What he learned there served to further depress his spirits and returning home, he sent his sister in law, who was alone in the house, out on an errand and shot himself through the head. When she returned he was dead. On the table was one of his business cards, on which he had scrawled with a pencil the following message to his wife: Dear Louisa--Take good care of our unborn child. I can live no longer. Worry over the troubles into which his temper had got him, slight as they were, had killed him. BALDROF did a good business and had been married to his second wife only a year. SEYMOUR, Kenneth Carroll, 5 months SMITH, Emma West YATES, Jane, 43 26 July 1890 DRAPER, John Among the old residents of South Brooklyn, the late John Draper was a familiar figure. He had lived among them for years, and as a business man, citizen and head of a family, was esteemed by all who knew him. Last Sunday his remains were interred in Greenwood Cemetery. Death was caused by paralysis, and the deceased was confined to his bed several weeks before he died. While his mind was still clear he said to his faithful children, 'I don't want any display at my funeral. No flowers. Put a plain headstone over my grave.' These instructions were characteristic of the man. In business he was unostentatious, although at times engaged in large transactions. He was a man of quiet, modest ways, yet had an iron will. His children, Richard, Thomas, William and Margaret, idolized him and he them. Day and night his daughter attended to his wants during his illness, and Thomas secured for him the attendance of two of the most eminent specialists in the medical fraternity of New York. He lacked for nothing that love or money could do for him. A cotton merchant of this city, who knew Mr. Draper when he was engaged in the same business, said to an "Eagle" representative:--"Permit me to correct some errors concerning John Draper which crept into print. He and his son William were, for a long time, in the cotton business. His word was so well thought of that he could buy cotton by simply putting up his finger. His word was all that was required, where others would have to make a deposit on purchases. William stood as well. Here was a favorite saying of the deceased:--'Make but few promises, make no bad promises, and never break a promise.' John Draper was born in the County Tipperary, Ireland, and so were his daughter Margaret and sons Thomas, Richard and William. Richard is still living in Ireland, and in prosperous circumstances. He visited his father last December. In 1848 the deceased, with his wife, daughter, William and Thomas, came to Brooklyn, and took a residence in the Second Ward. He subsequently removed to the Twelfth Ward, and finally to the Sixth Ward, where he died in the 75th year of his age, in his home, 16 Butler Street. Thomas and William will be remembered by South Brooklyn firemen as popular members of Hope Hose No. 90. Their mother died in Brooklyn in 1862. John Draper lived a quiet, model life. He did not mix up in politics, and was warden of the Church of Our Saviour for several years. At his funeral a chorus from Gorman's choir of the Church of Christ sang several hymns, and Rev. Dr. JEWETT of the New York Theological Society officiated. The deceased had many friends in church circles. He died as he lived--an upright and modest, yet courageous, citizen and an affectionate father. Thomas Draper is a stalwart, nervy man, yet he cried like a child by the side of the casket that contained the remains of the best friend he ever had on earth, with the exception of his mother. Thomas did all in his power to prolong his father's life and to make easy his dying hours. The son's tears did credit to his heart. 1892 29 July 1892 ALLEN, CATHERINE, widow of John B.
