For destitute, sick suffering from non-contagious diseases. Admission through Office of Admitting Physician, Reception Hospital, Queensboro Bridge, Welfare Island; 6217 patients; 1060 beds; Visiting days Thursday & Sunday 11 AM to 4 PM. Bird S. New York City Hospital, familiarly known as City Hospital closed in 1956 subsequently reopened in Queens and renamed Elmhurst General Hospital later renamed Elmhurst Hospital Center. Welfare Island also housed Metropolitan Hospital, Goldwater Memorial Hospital, Bird S. Coler Hospital.
