Notes:
1. The North River is another name for the Hudson River.
2. Central Park, which extends between Fifth and Eighth Avenues and
between 59th and 110th Streets, is not shown included in any ward on
this map.  Another map from the 1869 Manual of the Corporation, City
of New York shows Central Park split between 12th, 19th, and 22nd
Wards as indicated above.
3. As far as I've been able to determine from (poor) copies of
earlier maps, the ward boundaries described above have been unchanged
from no later than 1855, and below 40th Street no later than 1850,
and remained unchanged thereafter.
4. Areas of the Bronx annexed by New York County in 1874 and 1895
and prior to the incorporation of Greater New York City in 1898
became Wards 23 and 24 of New York City.
5. Some street name changes:
Above W 59th St, Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Avenues are now known
respectively as Columbus, Amsterdam, and West End Avenues.
W 59th St, Eighth Ave, and W 110th St bordering Central Park are
now known respectively as Central Park South, West and North.
