The Tablet - Oct. 19, 2002 - Vol. 95 No. 30
For those who may have had family members who attended All Saints High
School...The following appeared in "The Tablet"
FORMER ALL SAINTS H.S. WILL LIVE ON AS CO-OP HOUSING
BY PAUL ESMOND
For over 20 years the abandoned All Saints High School building stood,
unused, untouched, and ignored, with broken and boarded up windows, and
tarnishing brick.
The building is not unlike many other buildings nearby the Williamsburg
church. The broken up building on Whipple St. near Broadway has become idle
like many other buildings in the area.
On Thursday Oct. 4 however, congregants and members of the community watched
the first step in the building's renewal, a groundbreaking for a project that
will turn the vacant building into badly needed co-op housing for members of
the parish.
The groundbreaking, sponsored by All Saints and Con Edison, kicked off a 12
month rennovation of the building into 29 units of affordable housing. The
rennovations are a project of Con Edison's Renaissance in New York
initiative, a program to assist neighborhood organizations develop housing
from vacant buildings.
(article goes into further detail about the project and its financing and
ends as follows)
Parishioners recalled the changes that have taken place on All Saints
properties over the years, before the construction of a job training facility
and McDonald's on former church grounds.
"That was a playground for younger children," said Gwen Babbitt, a
parishioner, pointing to McDonald's.
"We saw it built and saw it gone," said Florence Simmons, a parishioner and
former All Saints parent.
"All of it just sitting there."
Sallie Martino-Fisher, a '61 graduate of the high school, lamented the
condition of her beloved school.
"I'm sad, but at the same time I'm happy for what's happening," said
Martino-Fisher. "It's too bad they couldn't do more because it's badly needed.
Martino-Fisher and her sister, Rose Martino, examined a broken window in the
courtyard of the school, looking in on a stripped dark room.
"That right there was the library." Martino-Fisher said.
