It is interesting to look at the growth of some wards during the famine and
also just prior and post e.g.

Ward 16 Ward 17 Ward 22

St Vincent de Paul 1840 St Nicholas 1833 Holy Cross[1] 1852
St Columba 1845 Nativity 1842 Assumption 1858
St Francis Xavier 1847 Most Holy Redeemer 1844 St Paul the Apostle 1858
                               St Brigid 1848
                               St Ann 1852
                               Immaculate Conception 1855

Other wards with more than one Catholic Church have grown over a longer period of time.

The original St Patrick's Cathedral is the oldest Roman Catholic church
building in NYC. As all churches of early days, it played a vital
role in are ancestors lives, helping them adapt to their enviroment. Now
known as Old St Patrick's, the cathedral on Prince and Mott streets had
served the Irish immigrant population since 1809.
In 1852 land for a new cathedral was purchased, but before the new
cathedral could be completed, St. Patrick's was destroyed by fire in 1866.
The cathedral was restored and rededicated by John Cardinal McClosky in
1868.
