BE SURE TO CHECK THE NEWSPAPER section for Marriage Licenses as listed in the Bklyn Paper.
NY State mandated registration of vital events in 1880, but the law was widely ignored
until well into the 20th century, when they started cracking down.
The City Clerk Marriage License Bureaus were opened in the boroughs in 1908, when it became
a requirement that a marriage license be obtained before the ceremony could take place.

A LITLE HELP FROM THE MUNICIPAL ARCHIVES.. Not all marriages were reported to the appropriate civil office. (This is most frequently the case with marriages performed in Roman Catholic churches.) Marriage records prior to 1866 for Manhattan are not indexed. Please provide the month, day and year of marriage. Note that pre-1866 Manhattan marriages were recorded in ledger book format; the following information was recorded: date of marriage, groom's and bride's names, ages, nativities, residences and by whom marriage performed. If you send to the Municipal Archives for a marriage record, you will get the Dept of Health's marriage certificate NOT the City Clerk's license. If you want the license, be sure to specify that in your request. |
Marriage certificates after 1930: CITY CLERK MARRIAGE LICENSE INDEXES, 1930-1951, NOW AVAILABLE AT NYC MUNICIPAL ARCHIVESMarriage records from 1996 to present can be obtained in person from any of our offices. Marriage records from 1930 to 1995 can be obtained solely in the Manhattan Office. |
